Artist Albert Al Serino works primarily with watercolors, but also with acrylic, oil, and mixed media. He enjoys experimenting with textures and colors. There are a lot of beaches and nature-related paintings in his work. The style of Albert’s art tends to be modern, traditional, contemporary, nave, and colorful. In his artwork, he often uses complementary colors such as green and red, blue and orange, or yellow and violet. Bright colors are also a favorite of his. With its wide range of colors, modern acrylic paint is perfect for his love of vibrant colors that are applied thickly from the tube. Serino can’t remember a time in his life when he didn’t consider himself an artist. He always drew and painted when he was a child. As an artist, he cannot claim to have made a conscious decision to be one. The pencil was always in Albert’s hand throughout his life. His favorite way of communicating was through drawing. His parents allowed him to attend art school instead of public school when he was eight years old. Despite his parents’ advice, he did not want to pursue a career in art. He disagreed with Albert. He attended art college as an adult. Albert Serino enjoys experimenting in his studio. Being part of the landscape and influenced by the colors, textures, and tones of the landscape is his preferred method of painting. Strokes of bold, gestural paint are applied.

What does Albert do in the Studio?

As with most watercolor artists, Albert likes to create acrylic paintings using watercolors. He doesn’t use an airbrush, but a roller and a palette knife to apply the acrylic paint. The acrylic paint works perfectly for him because it allows him to create a lot of colors with one mister. He prefers to work outside, being inspired by the colors, tones and textures of the landscape. Albert also likes to experiment with textures on paper, and in his studio. He’s experimented quite a lot with handmade paper, adding different textures and patinas to the paper by painting on it with different colors.

Albert’s paintings

Albert Serino paints in a very spontaneous way. He does not have a set concept for the painting. He just paints what comes to his mind, what he sees before him, with whatever colors strike his fancy. His paintings are non-objective, loosely connected, impressionistic, and abstract. He paints what he sees in nature, in still lifes, and in the studio. His paintings are colorful, abstract, and impressionistic. They are generally very large, and are mostly landscapes and seascapes, with a few still lifes, portraits, and cityscapes.

Albert’s works and art

Albert creates artwork with a range of mediums including watercolors, oil, acrylic, and mixed media. His paintings are colorful, abstract, and impressionistic. They are generally very large, and are mostly landscapes and seascapes, with a few still lifes, portraits, and cityscapes. His paintings have a free, spontaneous and flowing style, full of gesture and expression. They are very artistic and emotive, and the colors are vivid, strong, and vibrant. His paintings are often very colorful, with lots of bright and vivid colors.

Conclusion

Artwork can truly bring people together and help people express themselves better. It’s no wonder that so many people choose to paint on canvas as a form of self-expression. Art is one of the most accessible ways to connect with others, because no matter where someone is or what they are doing, they can look at a piece of art and feel something. With all the different types of art available and many different styles, there is something for everyone. A person can choose to paint in a style that reflects their own personality, or they can choose a style that reflects someone else’s personality. All types of art allow people to connect with others and to express themselves in a unique way.

Al Serino is a visual artist based in New York. In his work, he explores the relationship between surrealism and the landscape. By nature, he is a surrealist. As well as surreal art, Al Serino enjoys surreal music, surreal films, and surreal humor. Landscape painting has also always been a passion for him, in particular romantic and seasonal landscape paintings.

You can see more of Al Serino’s work on his Pictorem profile and read more about his work below.

What first got you into art?

Al Serino: I grew up in a household with a lot of creativity. My parents were both art historians which led to me being exposed to a lot of different styles and techniques from a young age. I’ve always been drawn to the creative process and wanted to be an artist. By the time I was in high school I was sketching full time and by the end of the decade, I was drawing full-time as a profession, displaying .

Can you tell us about your artistic education? Did formal education play in your artistic growth or did you find that elsewhere?

Al Serino: In 2004, I graduated from The Massachusetts College of Art with a BFA in painting.

The higher education I received was very beneficial to my art career. Pushing and challenging myself, gave me the structure I needed.

Following my BFA, I took a four-year break. During this break, I was able to make sure that being an artist was what I really wanted to do. I think sometimes bumbling around isn’t appreciated as much as it should be.

It was during this time that I felt lost artistically. My worst artwork to date. The struggle was tough, but it also gave me the insight I needed to make my MFA meaningful.

As a result, I was able to make the most of my education when I returned to school. My coursework became more purposeful as a result. Sometimes I used independent studies to learn what I needed instead of enrolling in classes. As part of my independent study, I learned about tax codes. The university also offered me the opportunity to take a leadership course for credit.

Graduate school was a worthwhile experience for me. I was able to fail and feel lost between undergraduate and graduate school, which made it a good fit for me.

Please describe your artwork style

Al Serino: I try to draw in a loose, flowing style that is easy on the eye but maintains a certain amount of structure. When I first started out as an artist I didn’t know what I was doing. Searched for artists on LinkedIn to get in contact with. I just drew whatever was coming into my head and hoped it looked like art.

I guess now I take a different approach. If I’m not sure what style I should be using, then I look to the masters. Great artists like Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo and Raphael have all used different techniques and styles to create some of the most beautiful works in the history of art.

What advice do you have for aspiring visual artists?

Al Serino: As an artist, unless you have an early break or financial support, you are likely to run your art practice alongside your life, between other commitments. That’s what I’ve done. Those who keep working and find the time to do this will get to where they want to go. I have found time and will continue to find it.

Artists are fortunate in the sense that they are driven to produce work. It is important to create because we need to create like we need to eat or drink. You are the only person who can make your work. Find the time to fulfill your purpose.

One of the most important things for any artist to do is to try out different techniques and styles until they find something that works best for them. Experimenting with different techniques and styles can greatly improve your work and lead to more successful projects in the future.

Some people know early on in their lives that they wish to be an artist; others find their passion as they grow up. In either case, there is an internal drive in their development as artists.

While there are never any hard-and-fast rules when it comes to a creative career, and there are undoubtedly a thousand different ways to “make it,” below, landscape painter Albert Serino offers up some guidelines that have helped him along the way.

Create something everyday

According to most artists, including Albert Serino, it’s 99% perspiration and 1% inspiration. Always carry a sketchbook with you wherever you go, and draw as often as you can. Regardless of your preferred medium, the humble pencil will help you through every creative block, as well as every burst of inspiration. Establish a routine for your week that encourages you to continue your artistic practice even if you are not feeling up to it. There is no guarantee of success as a self-employed individual and motivation can often be a challenge. However, amazing things can happen when you stop putting too much pressure on every mark to look ‘good’. When you look back through old sketchbooks, you might be surprised by what you find, and perhaps even find inspiration for new works.

Take art courses

If you’re interested in pursuing art as a career, you might as well be doing it full-time. That means taking classes on a consistent basis. And it doesn’t matter what kind of art you’re interested in—you should take classes in photography, painting, graphic design, and more so you have a wide variety of skill sets. You don’t have to take art courses exclusively either; you can also take classes on business, marketing, and other related fields. Whatever you choose to study, it’s important to view it as an investment in yourself. You’re training your brain to think like an artist—it’s only fair you give your brain some time to rest and grow.

Prepare for rejection

One of the scariest parts of pursuing a dream as an artist is the idea of rejection. It’s easy to become discouraged when you don’t get that first agent call or sell your first piece of art. The thing is, you can’t control any of that. You can’t make people like your art, and you can’t make people buy your art.

What you can control is how you respond to those things when they happen. When you’re rejected, don’t berate yourself. Don’t get defensive. Don’t be too strict with yourself. None of that helps. It only makes you feel worse. What you need to do instead is take a step back and ask yourself a few questions, explains American painter Albert Serino. What did the person who rejected you want from you? What do they see in your art that they like? Why did they say no? By keeping those questions in mind when you’re disappointed in the rejection, you stand a better chance of responding in a way that helps you move forward.

Network and be really friendly

If you want to stand out in the art industry, you have to make yourself memorable. One of the simplest ways to do that is to make friends in the art community. There’s a good chance you already know a few people who also consider themselves artists—why not make an effort to connect with them? Make an effort to go to art openings and exhibitions and meetups. Attend art-related social events. If nothing else, the creative community is full of some of the friendliest, most interesting people you’ll ever meet. The more you put yourself out there, the easier it’ll be to make connections and build those relationships. Be friendly and approachable, and you’ll find that people gravitate towards you. You may even find someone who can recommend you for a job or offer to help you with your art.

Don’t give up after the first failure

If you’re serious about pursuing a career as an artist, you’re going to fail. Really, really fail. Keep that in mind when you’re trying things for the first time. If you’ve never done something like this before, odds are it won’t go well. Paint a piece. Try a photography project. Write a song. Take the art class your friend told you to take. Don’t be afraid to fail because you don’t know how to do something. The best artists fail a lot, and the worst artists never fail at all. The only thing you have to fear is fear itself. So, whatever you’re trying to do, don’t let fear stop you.

Be patient

The most important thing to remember when you’re pursuing a career as an artist is patience. The art world moves at a snail’s pace. You can spend months trying to get a single project off the ground, only to have it fall flat on its face. Keep believing in yourself even when no one else does, and don’t let that first rejection hold you back. It’s going to happen. It’s just a matter of when. You’ve got this, artist. You can do this.
